Raising a child with special needs is exceptionally difficult. Each day and year brings a new set of worries.

My husband and I recently celebrated our 22nd Anniversary.  I wonder where all that time has gone.  My daughter is 19 and was born with special needs.  Three years later our family grew with the addition of our son who is now 16.  Someone once told me that you really did not know what love is until you have a child. I believe they are right!  I am so thankful that I am a parent and our children have filled our lives with joy.

Raising a child with special needs is exceptionally difficult. Each day and year brings a new set of worries.  There have been years of doctor appointments, and therapy. As an infant, we had to teach my daughter to hold her head up, roll over, sit, crawl and walk. Each hurdle was a celebration of its own and each year brought new challenges.  It made us appreciate all those things most of us take for granted, and to be grateful for the small accomplishments we made.  While many mothers were off to the playground, we were off to an appointment.  I learned creative ways to keep an active 2 year old entertained for hours in a doctor’s office while waiting for his big sister.

In looking back, those were happy yet stressful years. I sometimes wonder how we survived the craziness.  Now my children are young adults and those years seemed to have past in a blink of the eye.  Life is still hectic and I pray every day my children will be safe.  The only thing that has not changed over the years is how thankful we continue to be for the time with family and friends.  We love each of our children for their uniqueness.  In my home, Thanksgiving Day is celebrated everyday as we recognize the good fortune of "Family".
