UNS Misbahas: for people who count

Islamic prayer beads are a means of increasing one’s dhikr, one of the major practices of Islam, as outlined by Allah and the Prophet Mohammed (peace and blessings be upon him). A baseline concept in Islamic Law is that, “Means take the rulings of the ends they are used for, as long as they are not in themselves blameworthy or deemed interdicted by the Lawgiver.” 1 The use of a Misbaha or Muslim prayer beads, as found in UNS’ Islamic Jewellery, facilitates a large number of repetitions of tasbeeh.

The tasbeeh of Alhamdulilah (33), Subhanallah (33) and Allahu Akbar (34) are traditionally recited after each prayer on one’s fingers or using Islamic prayer beads. One may also use a misbaha to make habitual dhikr in the morning and night. Muslim prayer beads can be found in a set of thirty-three, ninety-nine or a hundred beads. A small misbaha can be cycled through more than once for longer repetitions or a ninety-nine bead one used partially for shorter repetitions. Both are available in UNS‘ Islamic Jewellery.

Various materials are used to make Islamic prayer beads. In the land of traditional Misbaha making, only a few artisans still open shop in Istanbul, a hallmark of a previous generation and a thriving market. As before, exotic materials are still being imported from as far as South Africa, far Asia and the Mediterranean. “Besides 99 beads, tesbih also consists of: the "nisane", a disc which separates each 33 beads, the "pul", a small bead that marks the seventh position, the "imame", which is a long piece marking the beginning of the string, and the "tepelik" at the top of the imame. In 33 bead tesbih, "nisane" separates 11 beads and there is no "pul".2 (see UNS‘ Islamic Jewelry)
