One of the Best options for fishing on Long Island in the upcoming weeks is the amazing run of fluke in long island sound.

Long Island fishing for Fluke,  Port Jefferson , New York

Another great season is upon us!  Now that the water temperature is increasing, an abundance of fish have shown up in our local area.  There are tremendous schools of striped bass, fluke, porgies and bluefish moving into the area and the next few weeks will be some of the top fishing of the entire year!

One of the Best options for fishing on Long Island in the upcoming weeks is the amazing run of fluke in long island sound.

1)Fluke fishing  has been incredible the past several years in Long Island sound.  From Huntington to Mattituck the stage is set for another excellent season.  Every year when the  water  temperature  gets  to the mid 50 to high 50s the fluke start to feed aggressively.   The best places to target are up on the shallow shoal and flats like Buoy 11 and Buoy 9.  Focus on the shallow areas 10-20 feet of water.

It is very important to locate schools of bait.  Don't just drift blindly around.  Look for birds working the water and watch your fish finder of you have one.  Once you locate the bait, start your drift and see what kind of life you find.  Hopefully it will pay off.

When fishing shallow water, it is very important to fish with light tackle.  Using  fluorocarbon leader makes a huge difference.  Type all your rigs on 10-20 lb flouro and employ a very light rod.  Bucktails are your best bet as well as many a day they will far out produce a standard bait rig.  The best way to rig up is with a ½ ounce to 1.5 ounce bucktail tie on flouro.   Then 12 inches above the bucktail tie a 2 inch dropper loop and put either a hook and a teaser or even just a plain hook.  Bait your bucktail with one or two spearing and put one spearing on the hook you tied 12 inches above the bucktails.

It is very important to have good drifting conditions as you will want to cover some ground.  Look for days when you will have wind direction moving the same direction as the tide.   For example the outgoing tide in long island sound runs from west to east.  So a day that the wind is blowing from the west will provide you with much better conditions.

The best part of the tide to fish is usually around the very end of the tide and the first push of the next tide.  Make sure you don't miss that window as sometimes that short period can make or break your entire day.

There are many options if you have your own boat.  You can launch from the local ramps either in port Jefferson or mt Sinai.  Additionally the party boat fleet sails trips daily from port Jefferson.    The peak of the season is from the end of may till the first few weeks of July.  Lets hope this amazing fishery continues as the every year seems to get better and better.  Get your tackle together and plan a great day fishing fluke fishing long island sound!
