Roid rage is often the result of prolonged use of steroids. It can unleash inborn aggression and lead to crime.

Roid Rage: The Culprit for Acts of Violence There have been a host of murders, violent attacks and other acts of brutality recently which have been blamed on roid rage. Roids, or anabolic steroids in full, are drugs which, when taken regularly and in large doses, unleash an urge for aggressive behavior by people who use them.

Roid Rage: One of the Numerous Consequences of Taking Anabolic Steroids The impact steroids exert on the human body involves introducing extra testosterone into it. Initially its impact on the human psyche is beneficial and leads to elated spirit and a feeling of being omnipotent, but afterwards, following prolonged periods of administration, the hormone gives rise to aggression, hostility and serious psychological and mental conditions such as depression, mania, schizophrenia. Such conditions and the sudden changes in the person’s mood are the prerequisite for surging roid rage. Adverse Implications of Roid Rage The use of anabolic steroids and subsequent roid rage poses serious health hazards.

The negative consequences on people are twofold: on one hand, they deteriorate their health by taking steroids and lapsing into roid rage and may hurt themselves or even endanger their own life; on the other hand, they are a potential threat to other people as the may commit crimes while under the influence of steroids. In addition to the negative consequences of rage manifestations, people on anabolic steroids tend to have a higher suicide rate compared to the general populace. Roid Rage Is Most Likely to Occur in Risk Groups However, the situation is more complex than it is assumed to be.

A number of clinical studies of roid rage have established that besides rendering the person on anabolic steroids prone to aggression and violence, roids tend to cause such violent behavior in people who have a history of being short-tempered and have experienced frequent fits of anger, hostility or violence prior to initiating roid use. Hence the conclusion that roid rage is more likely to develop in people who are already known for such aggressive behavior. Roid Rage Should Not Be Regarded as Attenuating Circumstance Although it is sometimes asserted that roid rage can be used as an attenuating circumstance in legal defense of people guilty of committing acts of violence, the above-mentioned studies suggest that such assertions are not right, as the person guilty of the violent act is highly likely to have already manifested proneness to violence.

Furthermore, the act of violence may be due to the person’s having discontinued steroid use, because when steroid administration is discontinued suddenly, the result is likely to be hostility and aggression on part of the person towards other people. Measures to Curb Roid Rage The problem of roid rage should be addressed adequately and people who regularly take anabolic steroids should be monitored carefully and provided with medical assistance to help them recover. It should be borne in mind that besides people who are aggressive by nature, other people who take steroids may also be at risk. Summary: Roid rage is often the result of prolonged use of steroids. It can unleash inborn aggression and lead to crime. People at risk should be monitored and given medical assistance.
